Sight Words
Sight words are high frequency words that must be identified by sight, since they are difficult, if not impossible, to sound out. These are also high frequency words; words that are encountered most often when reading. At South Hills, the children are exposed daily to sight words, and this list is being provided to parents for home practice. HOWEVER, please keep in mind that it is really not appropriate to use these as flash card drills. Instead, consider putting three or four of the sight words on cards, making two copies of each word. Play a memory game using the cards! Another suggestion would be for your child to hold one of the cards while you read a story, and encourage your child to locate a 'match' as you read.
