Home Work: Creative Arts

The activities listed below support the PreKindergarten educational standards in the area of the Creative Arts.   At South Hills, your child will be engaged in daily art activities focusing on art, artists, a variety of art media, music, musicians, musical instruments, puppet work, dramatic play, stories, storytelling, and observations within all of these areas.  The state standards state:

“Creative expression is an important component of children’s early learning experiences. Children who are given opportunities to develop their imagination and creativity through a variety of media are learning to express their individuality in interests, abilities and knowledge. When they view others’ work, children are also learning to appreciate and respect differences in culture and viewpoint. Creative expression influence children’s growing competence as creative problem solvers and provides insight about the world around them. Teachers support creative learning by providing process-oriented play experiences that encourage children to use their imagination and to experiment with new ideas and materials.”

Here are some activities you might want to enjoy with your child to support our work and the state standards:

--Provide your child with a variety of art materials such as chalk, paint, crayon, pencils, markers (thick and thin), play dough.  If you are concerned about the mess, just move the projects outdoors to the deck or yard!

--If you have a paved driveway or sidewalk, give your child a cup of water and paintbrush to paint the paved ‘canvas’.  The painting will fade away in the sun eventually.

--Provide vocabulary works to support your child’s work with play dough (pounding, cutting, rolling, squeezing, patting)

--Provide models for your child to paint (a plastic dinosaur, for example).  Have your child observe the model first as you point out the shapes (what shape is the body of this dinosaur?) and then encourage the child to reproduce the shape  (Can you draw an oval?)

--Show your child figures that display emotion and include vocabulary.  (What is this person doing?  Crying.  How does he feel?  Sad.)  Have your child attempt to draw figures that show a variety of emotions.

--Provide opportunities for your child to create art without a model, including a variety of colors and strokes.  (sweeping movements, dots, short lines, etc.)

--Ask open ended questions about your child’s art work “Tell me about your picture”

--Introduce photos, drawings, paintings, statues to your child and provide the vocabulary to go with it.
